Ashtanga; Lower Chakras

Energetically, those suffering eating disorders or low self-esteem suffer a distinct lack of energy in the lower 3 chakras.

Muladhara is the root chakra providing our connection to the Earth (body) and our energetic centre of proprioception; feeling in the physical body. To re-energise this centre we use rooting, standing asanas to establish a firm connection to the earth e.g. Tadasana and Vrkasana.

Svadisthana is our centre for expressing our creation and transforming our feelings to action, vital for the strength to heal. Hip openers energise this chakra e.g. Upavista Konasana and Baddha Konasana.

Manipura is related to empowerment and self-esteem. Core strengtheners rejuvenate energy here to support the upper chakras sufficiently e.g. Adho mukha dandasana and Navasana.

A sufferer will have an excess of energy in the upper chakras. An overcharged ajna chakra helps feed the illusion of control that starvation provides. By working on these areas we encourage the excess energy to move toward the lower chakras and balance.
